In this post, I will discuss different mountain ranges on Tibetan Plateau.

Shambhala, A mythical land of enlightened beings and pure happiness is said to be surrounded by high mountain ranges. Tibet is also known as Shambhala for many westerners as many beautiful mountain ranges surround it. 

We call our home, land of snows and ourself snowpeople. Everything aspect of our daily life is strongly influenced by the fact many mountain ranges in all surround Tibet is the edge.

Following are the mountain ranges on Tibetan Plateau.

1) The Himalaya Range

  • Himalaya mountain range is most well know in the world for its beautiful peaks. Especially for 8000+ peaks like Mount Everest. 
  • The range is located in the southern border of the plateau forming the political boundary between China to Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bhutan.
  • The Himalaya range covers more than 2400 kilometres in length and 250 to 400 km in width. 
  • It begins in Pakistan and finishes in east Tibet in Nyingchi Prefecture.
  • Himalaya Range includes ten of fourteen 8000 metre peaks on the world. It is also considered the youngest mountain range on the planet. 
  • The Tibet side of the Himalayas is dry, cold and windy. It has sparse vegetation, and it’s severely cold in the winters.
  • This range has a profound effect on the climate of the Tibetan Plateau.

2) The Karakoram

  • The Karakoram range is located on the northeast by the edge of the Tibetan Plateau. 
  • The highest peak in this range is Mt K2 in Pakistan, which is the second-highest mountain in the world Mt Everest.
  • The average elevation of mountains in the Karakorams range is about 20,000 feet (6,100 metres)
  • It has four of them exceeding 8,000 m.
  • The Karakoram is the most complex mountain range in Tibetan plateau. 

3) Kunlun

  • The Kunlun mountain range is located on the northern edge of the Tibetan Plateau. 
  • It extends on nearly 3000km from Pamirs in Tajikistan to Qinghai Province in China. 
  • The highest peak on the range is at 7723m on Ulugh Muztag. 
  • Kunlun is home to some of the most famous Tibetan Wildlife including wild Ass, Tibetan antelope, wild yaks, snow leopards, etc.

4) Alps of Sichuan 

  • The Alps of Sichuan is located between Tibet, Sichuan and Yunan province of China. 
  • This range makes Tibetan inhabited regions of Yunan and Sichuan, the most beautiful place on earth. 
  • The Alps of Sichuan is popularly known as the home of the giant panda. 
  • The average elevation of the alps of Sichuan mountain range between 5000 to 6000 meters.  
  • Some of the most beautiful places to visit in the alps of Sichuan are Jiuzhaigou National Park, Shangrila and Yading Nature Reserve.
