Shigatse prefecture corresponds roughly to the historic Tsang region and is located in the south-western part of the Tibet Autonomous Region. Before liberation, it was an important administration region called “Tsangyul”. Successive Panchen Lamas ruled it with the administrative centre of Shigatse city.

Today it is the biggest prefecture in Tibet Autonomous Region. There are 18 counties and around half of the areas are Nomadic.

On the southern side, it borders Bhutan, Sikkim, and Nepal. The world’s highest mountains, Everest (Qomolangma), is also located in Tingri county of this prefecture, along with several other 8,000 meters Mountain peaks.

Besides, there are many rivers of different sizes flowing into the Yarlung Tsangpo, or the Brahmaputra. This river flows from West to east across the length of this prefecture.

Shigaste

Tashi Lhunpo Monastery is the most famous religious centre and the official residence for the Panchen Lama; there are also many important monasteries. To name a few, Sakya, Shalu, Pekor Choede, Nenying, Nartang, and Phuntsokling, etc.

This prefecture is the home of many famous masters and yogis of Tibet, such as Milarepa, and Thangtong Gyalpo, who built many iron bridges in this area and other places.
